Air pollution control is one of the most significant challenges faced by the cement manufacturing industry. Emission regulations are tightening across the globe and the public is demanding cleaner air. Cement manufacturers must adapt to meet emission challenges in cement production and regulatory standards.

LDX Solutions is your clean air partner. For over 25 years we have helped our partners in the cement industry meet evolving regulatory requirements. Here, we discuss key air pollution control equipment to ensure your cement facility meets regulatory standards.

Key APC Equipment

Cement manufacturers can and must invest in effective air pollution control (APC) equipment. This equipment is essential to combating air pollution from the cement industry. Effective equipment will reduce the emissions of harmful pollutants, mitigate environmental impacts, and contribute to a cleaner world. LDX Solutions works with our partners to ensure the systems we install meet the unique needs of every plant. Key APC equipment for cement production includes the following solutions.

Baghouses

Cement production is the largest source of particulate matter emissions. A dust control system is an effective method for particulate capture, efficiently reducing particulate matter emissions.
Baghouses, also known as fabric filter dust collectors or dust collectors, are collection devices designed for high removal rates of particles greater than 1 micron. Baghouses are utilized in a variety of process applications and can offer a higher dust removal efficiency than other equipment options. These systems can effectively reduce dust emissions while also saving on electricity consumption when compared to other options.
Baghouses are extremely effective and can achieve removal rates greater than 99.9%. In a baghouse system, process gas passes through a permeable barrier. The barrier removes the particulates from the gas stream. These systems can often be designed to allow the plant operator to choose whether to clean the filters online or offline. This optionality can ensure continuous operation as well as an improved filter life.

CDS (Circulating Dry Scrubbers)

Scrubbers are another effective technology for minimizing emissions in cement production. Circulating dry scrubbers (CDS) utilize high levels of fine water droplets, hydrated lime, and flue gas together within a circulatory fluidized bed reactor to create ideal reaction conditions.
CDS systems have high removal efficiencies for acid gases. This includes hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and sulfur trioxide (SO3). The CDS system offered by LDX Solutions can achieve >99% SO2 and HCl removal efficiency.
CDS systems offer several benefits. Notably, as mentioned above, CDS systems are efficient systems for capturing acid gases that are commonly released during the cement manufacturing process. These systems can be an important tool to ensure that cement plants meet environmental regulations. These systems can also operate with less water when compared to wet scrubbers. Additionally, CDS systems regenerate and recycle material which can help to improve overall efficiency.

DSI (Dry Sorbent Injection)

Впрыск сухого сорбента (DSI) systems are another system that cement plants can use for acid gas control. DSI systems can help to mitigate SO2, SO3, HCl, and HF. These systems tend to offer removal efficiencies of up to 60% for SO2 and more than 99% for HCl.
DSI systems work via the injection of a dry sorbent into the flue gas ductwork following the boiler. This is done to reduce the concentration of acid gases which react with the dry sorbent. The resulting product is then collected and removed in a downstream particulate control device.
DSI systems are a low capital cost method for cement plants to meet certain regulatory requirements, including SO2 reduction. DSI systems may be an option in situations where lower efficiencies will suffice. Additionally, these systems may be a preferred option for smaller plants where other scrubber types may not be necessary.

ACI (Activated Carbon Injection)

Cement production is a dirty process. In addition to acid gases and particulate matter, the process can also result in heavy metals and dioxins. Installing and maintaining the right air pollution control systems, like an activated carbon injection (ACI) system, is critical to compliance and plant efficiency.
ACI systems are an effective technology for combating heavy metals and ensuring dioxin removal. In an ACI system, activated carbon powder is pneumatically injected from a storage silo into the flue gas ductwork to absorb pollutants from the flue gas. The pollutants are then collected with the fly ash in the plant’s particulate collection device.
LDX Solutions supplies ACI systems capable of mitigating up to 99% removal of mercury and heavy metals. These systems are an effective and cost-efficient means to reduce dioxins and other emissions from most boilers.
