One of the many challenges faced in pulp and paper production is controlling emissions. This includes volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and particulate matter. Air pollution regulations are becoming stricter as communities and governments demand cleaner air. Responding to these challenges requires choosing the right air pollution control technologies.

LDX Solutions is your partner for controlling emissions. Since 1937, we have worked with leaders in the pulp and paper industry to help them meet expanding regulatory requirements. Here, we identify some of the top technologies for controlling emissions in pulp and paper manufacturing.

Key APC Equipment

LDX Solutions is a leader in air pollution control (APC) technology. Our team of experts has the knowledge and experience that our partners rely on across industries. Our partners in the pulp and paper industry come to us for their key air pollution control equipment, including the equipment discussed below.

RTO/RCO Systems

Thermal oxidizers are a leading technology for the destruction of VOC-yhdisteet and HAPs in pulp and paper production.

A regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) is effective in high-temperature oxidation to destroy organic compounds. Most RTOs can achieve 95%-99% destruction removal efficiency. Destruction removal efficiency is the percentage of VOCs and HAPs the RTO destroys. RTOs are a preferred oxidizer technology because of their high destruction removal efficiency and their lower operating costs thanks to their ability to reuse thermal energy.

A regenerative catalytic oxidizer (RCO) is simply a thermal oxidizer with an added catalyst. RCOs can also be an energy efficient choice, especially in situations where the VOC concentration is low.

RCOs are sensitive to certain compounds in the gas stream. That is why it is important to work with an experienced team like our Process Solutions team. Our team can evaluate your production process and determine which solution is the best fit for your needs.

WESP

A wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) uses electrostatic forces to remove hiukkasia emissions in exhaust gas streams. WESPs can be effective solutions for sticky or combustible dusts or when there is a large amount of sub-micron capture required. WESPs can be effective for fine particulate control and can capture particulates that may pass through a venturi scrubber or baghouse.

WESPs offer a number of advantages for the pulp and paper industry. Notably, WESPs offer high removal efficiency, typically 90% to 99%. WESPs tend to have minimal energy costs when compared to other technologies and have a corrosion-resistant design which expands the use to include acidic gases. These systems can be a crucial technology to ensure that pulp and paper mills meet air quality emission standards.

Baghouses

Baghouses, or fabric filter dust collectors, utilize a gas- permeable barrier to remove particulate matter from industrial gas streams. The process gas stream passes through the fabric filter bags, trapping the particles on the outside of the filter and allowing the clean air to pass through. The bags are cleaned by dislodging the dust for either disposal or recycling.

Baghouses are effective collection devices for the removal of particles greater than one micron. They are extremely efficient and can achieve removal rates greater than 99.9%. Baghouses can be a preferred technology for the removal and control of wood dust and fibers, but may not work for moist or sticky particulates. Our experienced Process Solutions team is here to help you choose the best system for your particulate matter collection.
